PANDA (Paediatric Acuity & Nursing Dependency Assessment) enables nursing management to estimate safe nursing care for children on their wards This is a critical challenge at all times but especially so when there are widespread nursing shortages
PANDA was designed to meet the nursing care needs of acute paediatric patients Most other similar tools for children are adapted from safe care tools designed for adults Its use ensures compliance with safe care guidance for each shift, identifying resources, skills and gaps that may compromise patient care The system was developed in partnership with Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (GOSH)
PANDA uses an industry-approved safe nursing care model It generates staffing recommendations for each ward based on the needs of its patients It calculates the right number and skill-set of nurses per ward shift based on the needs of each patient
In addition, it collates data on the UK Paediatric Critical Care Minimum Data Set (PCCMDS) to allow accurate charging of high dependency care
And because it highlights the gap between resource availability and needs, it can also provide useful input to staff training planning
PANDA calculates safe staffing levels by assessing patients against 84 ‘care categories’ to determine patient acuity levels These care categories are derived from guidance from the Department of Health and the PCCMDS
PANDA then identifies the appropriate ‘nursing dependency’ needs for each child based on guidance from the Royal College of Nursing
PANDA has demonstrably improved resource-sharing across wards, highlighted nursing shortages and demonstrated compliance with safe care guidelines
It has also generated over £10m in additional Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) funding for one trust as it provides the evidence required to secure funding
And most importantly, it has improved the confidence of nursing staff that they are meeting the nursing needs of high dependency patients in their care
But PANDA has been around for a while and needs a new look and feel to work on mobiles and tablets, and to take advantage of new technology such as artificial intelligence (AI)
PANDAi is scheduled for release in the second quarter 2022 Take a look at PANDAi: a new look for PANDA to find out more
