Zoom buys Onyx, keeping its enterprise search open source
23 October 2026: Zoom has acquired Onyx, an open-source platform for enterprise search and knowledge management, and says Onyx will remain a standalone product that stays open source, model-agnostic, app-agnostic and self-hostable. Onyx's co-founders, Chris Weaver and Yuhong Sun, have joined Zoom, and the platform becomes part of Zoom AI Services. Zoom gives no price.
Not yet independently verified. Zoom does not give a price or a closing date, and we have not found a statement from Onyx itself. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
What Onyx brings
Founded in 2023, Onyx connects to more than 50 business applications, among them document stores, wikis, ticketing systems and customer records, and serves context from them on demand to people and to AI agents. Because it is open source and can be run entirely on a customer's own infrastructure, it suits organisations with data sovereignty or on-premises requirements. Zoom says Onyx has a community of more than 30,000 developers, processes more than a million user queries a week, and counts NASA, Nebius and Hudson River Trading among the organisations that use it.
Why Zoom wants it
Zoom frames the deal around what it calls "Conversation to Completion": meetings, chats and calls should lead to work getting done, increasingly by agents. Its argument is that a general model knows about the world but not about a company's own customers, policies and processes, and that agents need that context before they act. "AI can tell you almost anything about the world, but it doesn't have the relevant perspective about your customers or your processes," Zoom writes. Onyx is meant to supply that perspective, connecting the policies, documentation, history and relationships held across an organisation's systems and making them available to agents before they act, so that it sits between the systems where knowledge lives and the agents Zoom is building.
What changes for Onyx users
On Zoom's account, very little in the short term. The commitments are specific: Onyx stays standalone, open source, independent of any one AI model or application, and deployable on a customer's own servers. What Zoom adds, it says, is access to its resources, scale and AI capabilities so the team can build faster.
For organisations already running Onyx, those four commitments are the ones to hold Zoom to: the project's open-source repository and licence are where any change would be visible. Our enterprise search software category lists 19 products and our knowledge management category 13.
