This page covers accounting firms across the United States, from CPA practices to tax and bookkeeping offices. TrustList lists 2,702 of them, and 589 earned a rank number in the Q4 2026 edition. Among the ranked, 20 hold a professional accreditation, and one each cites ISO 9001 and ISO 27001. The most common founding decades are the 1990s (136), 1980s (116) and 2000s (97). Bases are widely spread, with San Diego (9), Los Angeles (7), Denver (6) and Southern California (6) leading the places named.

How to choose accounting firms

1. Verify licence and credentials
CPAs are licensed by their state board of accountancy. Ask for the licence number and check it with the board. Enrolled agents are federally authorised to represent clients before the IRS, so ask which credential applies.
2. Match the service to the person
Tax returns, audit, bookkeeping, payroll and IRS representation call for different skills. Ask who will do your work, what credentials they hold and whether staff or outside contractors prepare returns.
3. Think about state and local tax
If you trade in several states or hire remotely, ask how the firm handles state and sales tax filings. Rules differ from state to state, so a local firm may know yours better.
4. Ask about IRS notices
Find out whether the firm will respond to IRS letters, whether that costs extra and who signs the return. Ask what happens if you are audited after they have prepared a filing.
5. Agree fees and software in writing
Ask for a written engagement letter that sets scope and whether fees are fixed or hourly. If you use QuickBooks or similar software, confirm you keep your own login and records.
6. Check data security
Accountants hold tax identifiers and bank details. Ask how documents are shared, whether a secure client portal is used and how files are kept or returned if you leave.
