IT Product Company

Onyx is an open-source enterprise search and assistant platform that connects to company knowledge, can be self-hosted or run in a private cloud, and was acquired by Zoom on 23 October 2026.

About Onyx

Onyx is an open-source enterprise search platform with a built-in assistant. It connects to the places where a company keeps its knowledge, such as documents, wikis, ticketing systems and customer records, and lets people and software agents ask questions across them. According to Zoom's announcement on 23 October 2026, Onyx was founded in 2023 by Chris Weaver and Yuhong Sun, who have joined Zoom together with the Onyx team. No deal terms were disclosed.

What it does

The product searches connected sources in parallel and enforces each source's own permissions, so users only see what they are allowed to see. Its site lists more than 50 connectors that sync continuously, a desktop app, a Chrome extension, a Slack bot and support for the MCP protocol. It is model-agnostic: customers can switch providers, send different teams to different models, or run open-weight models on their own graphics hardware. Deployment options include a customer's own cloud (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure or Kubernetes), bare metal and fully air-gapped installations, with single-tenant, in-VPC and on-premise set-ups. The company says documents, embeddings and model traffic stay inside the customer's infrastructure. A forward-deployed engineer helps with set-up and rollout.

Under Zoom

Zoom says Onyx will remain a standalone platform that stays open source, model-agnostic and app-agnostic, and fully self-hostable for organisations with data sovereignty or on-premises needs. Zoom is adding it to its AI services. The Onyx site cites more than 1,000 teams and 20,000 GitHub stars as its own figures. A paid Business plan is listed at 20 US dollars per user per month on annual billing, with enterprise pricing on request.
