This page ranks accounting firms in California, from long-established CPA partnerships to small bookkeeping and tax practices. TrustList lists 608 of them, and 111 earned a rank number in the Q4 2026 edition. Of the ranked firms, four hold a professional accreditation and 104 state a founding date, with the 1990s (29) and 1980s (26) the most common decades. San Diego has seven, Los Angeles five, and Fresno and San Francisco three each.

The order reflects evidence TrustList held on 5 October 2026: client reviews, vetting, awards and facts each firm states on its own website, which we read and dated. Nobody pays to be placed. How to choose accounting firms

1. Check the CPA licence
Public accounting in California is licensed through the state board of accountancy. Ask for the licence number of the person signing your work and look it up yourself before you engage the firm.
2. Match the firm to your work
Personal returns, small-business books, payroll, audit and estate work call for different skills. Ask who will do your type of job and whether the firm handles clients like you.
3. Ask about IRS and state notices
If you may face a notice or audit, ask whether the firm represents clients before the IRS and the Franchise Tax Board, and whether that is billed separately from preparing the return.
4. Confirm software and file sharing
Many firms support QuickBooks. Ask which versions they use, how documents are exchanged securely, and how you get your records back if you change accountant.
5. Get fees and scope in writing
Ask for an engagement letter stating what is included, whether fees are fixed or hourly, and what extra work such as catch-up filings or amended returns would cost.
6. Think about size and access
A small practice may give direct access to the owner; a larger one may offer more specialisms. Ask who your day-to-day contact is and who covers when they are away.
