Copilot Studio app leaves Teams, editing ends in January 2027
16 October 2026: Microsoft is retiring the Copilot Studio app inside Microsoft Teams. Creating agents there is already unsupported, editing existing agents in Teams stops from early January 2027, and the app is removed from Teams by early February 2027, according to Message Center post MC1511056, published on 16 October and tagged as a major change and a retirement.
Not yet independently verified. We read this Message Center post (MC1511056) through a public archive of the admin centre, not in a tenant's own Message Center. Microsoft gives the dates only as early January and early February 2027. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
What moves and what keeps working
The change affects classic-style chatbot agents that people built or manage through the Copilot Studio app in Teams. Those agents are not being switched off. Microsoft says users can keep creating, editing, publishing and managing them in the Copilot Studio web app at copilotstudio.microsoft.com, which becomes the only place to do so.
The rollout begins in early January 2027 and is expected to complete by early February. The post names Microsoft Copilot Studio, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot as the services involved, and it lists two groups as affected: users who make or maintain agents through the Teams app, and the admins and support teams who guide them.
Who notices first
The people most likely to be caught out are business users who built a departmental bot from inside Teams, never opened the web app and may not know it exists. When editing stops in January, the agent keeps answering, but nobody can change it from where it was built. Organisations that encouraged citizen developers to start in Teams should find those owners before then.
Licensing and access are worth checking at the same time. A user who could reach Copilot Studio inside Teams needs to be able to sign in to the web app with the right environment and permissions, or the first edit after January turns into a helpdesk ticket.
The admin checklist Microsoft gives
Microsoft's recommended actions are short: move users to the web app, and update internal documentation, training material, helpdesk scripts and bookmarks that point to the Teams experience. For organisations that track Message Center items by tag, MC1511056 carries both the Major change and Retirement labels, so it should already be in the queue of whoever owns Teams or Power Platform change notices.
The post sits beside a wider move of Copilot Studio work into its web app over the past year, and Microsoft says it is "continuing the transition" rather than announcing a new direction. It gives no exact day for either milestone.
