This page ranks accounting firms across Canada, from long-established chartered professional accountant practices to small bookkeeping and tax services. TrustList lists 381 of them, and 77 earned a rank number in the Q4 2026 edition. Among the ranked, 3 hold a professional accreditation and 73 state a founding date, most often in the 2000s (24), the 1990s (14) and the 2010s (13), with two from the 1940s. Vancouver is the most common base (9), ahead of Surrey, Victoria and Toronto at 3 each.

The order rests on evidence TrustList held on 5 October 2026: client reviews, vetting, awards and facts each firm states on its own website, which we read and dated. Nobody pays to be placed. How to choose accounting firms

1. Check the CPA designation
Most Canadian accountants hold the Chartered Professional Accountant title, regulated by a provincial body. Ask for the name of the individual who will sign your work and look them up on that body's register.
2. Know the level of assurance
Audit, review engagement and compilation give different levels of comfort. Ask which one your lender, investor or regulator requires, and whether the firm has the staff to deliver it.
3. Ask who handles the CRA
Clarify who files returns, GST/HST and payroll remittances, and who answers letters from the Canada Revenue Agency. Ask whether that support is included or billed separately.
4. Cross-border and language needs
If you have United States income or family ties, ask about experience with both tax systems. In Quebec and elsewhere, confirm the working language for meetings and documents.
5. Agree fees and scope in writing
Request an engagement letter stating what is covered, whether fees are fixed or hourly, and the cost of catch-up filings or extra queries.
6. Confirm software and access
Ask which bookkeeping software the firm supports, whether you keep your own login, and how your records are handed back if you change accountant.

How is this ranking worked out?

The order comes from what each firm publishes and what has been verified about it, and never from payment:

Profile completeness: the details a buyer needs to judge a firm — what it does, who it serves, how it prices, who it has worked for
Earned trust: verification, awards and the other checks a firm has actually passed
Client reviews, where they exist: the rating is smoothed, so one five-star review cannot outrank a firm with a hundred good ones, and volume counts with diminishing returns

Client reviews are still rare across this catalogue, so on most lists today the order is set by the first two. A firm near the top is the best-documented and best-verified one we hold, which is not the same claim as the best one to hire. Use the list to build a shortlist, then check the firms yourself.
