Flagship ranking · Q4 2026 edition

This page ranks accounting firms across Australia, from city practices with long histories to small bookkeeping and BAS services. TrustList lists 801 of them, and 176 earned a rank number in the Q4 2026 edition. Among the ranked, 13 hold a professional accreditation, and a further two cite ISO 9001 or ISO 27001. A hundred and fifty-nine state a founding date, from the 1940s to the 2010s. The most common bases are Melbourne (12), Sydney (9) and Canberra (4), with Toowoomba, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide each at three.

Places are set by the evidence TrustList held on 5 October 2026: client reviews, vetting, awards and facts each firm states on its own website, which we read and dated. Nobody pays to be placed. A listing with nothing checkable is shown but not ranked, and positions stay as they are until the January 2027 edition. How to choose accounting firms

1. Confirm registration and membership
Ask whether the firm is registered with the Tax Practitioners Board and which professional body it belongs to, such as Chartered Accountants ANZ, CPA Australia or the Institute of Public Accountants. Check the register yourself.
2. Match the work to the firm
Tax returns, BAS lodgement, bookkeeping, payroll, audit and SMSF work are different skills. Ask who in the firm does your type of job and for examples of similar clients.
3. Check SMSF credentials separately
If you run a self-managed super fund, ask who administers it and who audits it. Auditors need to be independent of the accountant, so expect a separate firm or a clearly separate team.
4. Look at software and access
Many firms work in Xero or MYOB. Ask which they support, whether you keep your own login, and how records are handed back if you later change accountant.
5. Agree fees and scope in writing
Ask for a written engagement letter that sets out what is included, whether fees are fixed or hourly, and the cost of ATO correspondence or catch-up work.
6. Think about location
Remote service is common, but a regional firm may know local industries better. Ask whether meetings are in person and who covers when your usual contact is away.

How is this ranking worked out?

The order comes from what each firm publishes and what has been verified about it, and never from payment:

Profile completeness: the details a buyer needs to judge a firm — what it does, who it serves, how it prices, who it has worked for
Earned trust: verification, awards and the other checks a firm has actually passed
Client reviews, where they exist: the rating is smoothed, so one five-star review cannot outrank a firm with a hundred good ones, and volume counts with diminishing returns

Client reviews are still rare across this catalogue, so on most lists today the order is set by the first two. A firm near the top is the best-documented and best-verified one we hold, which is not the same claim as the best one to hire. Use the list to build a shortlist, then check the firms yourself.
