This ranking covers accounting firms in New York, taking in Manhattan boutiques, Long Island practices and firms serving upstate cities such as Syracuse and Rochester. TrustList lists 174 of them, and 35 earned a rank number in the Q4 2026 edition. One ranked firm holds a professional accreditation. Thirty-one state a founding date, from the 1910s to the 2010s. Syracuse is the most common base with four, followed by Jericho and New York with three each, and Rochester and Brooklyn with two.

How to choose accounting firms

1. Check the licence
Certified public accountants in New York are licensed by the state. Ask for the firm's and the individual's licence details, and ask whether they belong to the AICPA or the New York State Society of CPAs.
2. Know who handles IRS contact
CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys can represent you before the IRS. Ask who would handle a notice or an audit, and whether that is included in the fee or billed separately.
3. Ask about state and city tax
New York residents and businesses may face state and, in the city, local taxes on top of federal ones. Ask how the firm handles these, especially if you work or sell across state lines.
4. Choose the right level of service
Bookkeeping, tax returns, audit and fiduciary accounting differ. If you need an audit, ask whether the firm has had a peer review and what it covered.
5. Get scope and fees in writing
Ask for an engagement letter that names the services, deadlines and fee basis. Check what happens to the price if you send records late or the work grows.
6. Ask who does the work
Find out whether a partner or a junior will prepare your return, and how quickly emails are answered during the busy season.
