Moonshot AI

Moonshot AI is a Beijing artificial intelligence company that develops the Kimi family of large language models and sells them in two ways: as the Kimi assistant for people and businesses, and as the Kimi API platform for developers. Its site describes its aim as "seeking the optimal conversion from energy to intelligence" and says its research team publishes work for the open-source community.

What it does

The company's models are offered through the Kimi API platform on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no subscription. In October 2026 its flagship was kimi-k3.1-pro, with a high-speed variant; before it came Kimi K3, released on 16 July 2026, which Moonshot describes as an open-source model with 2.8 trillion parameters, native visual understanding and a context window of one million tokens. The K2 series, including the coding model kimi-k2.7-code and kimi-k2.6 (released on 20 April 2026), closes to new API users on 31 October 2026 and is due to be retired by the end of December. The platform's help centre also covers a zero data retention option.

Who it serves

Developers and companies building on the API are one audience. The other is users of the Kimi assistant, which the site lists with agent features, agent clusters, website building, documents, slides, spreadsheets and deep research, plus Kimi Code for programming and a Kimi Business offering for organisations. The assistant runs in the browser, as desktop apps for macOS and Windows, as a mobile app and as a browser plug-in.
