YugabyteDB is a distributed SQL database built on a fork of PostgreSQL with a distributed storage layer, and it also offers a Cassandra-style YCQL interface. Yugabyte develops it. The database is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, so it is open source and free to use. The management platform, YugabyteDB Anywhere, is under the Polyform Free Trial 1.0.0 licence, which allows a 32-day evaluation, and production use of that platform needs a commercial licence. The founders began building the database in February 2016. It can be run self-managed or as the managed YugabyteDB Aeon cloud service. The latest release is v2026.1.2.0, published on 22 September 2026. Published Aeon pricing starts at 125 dollars per vCPU per month for the Standard tier and 167 dollars per vCPU per month for the Professional tier, while Enterprise pricing is custom. Buyers should separate the two licence positions. The database engine can be used freely under Apache-2.0, but anyone who wants the Anywhere management platform in production, rather than the Aeon service, must arrange a commercial agreement with Yugabyte.
