Google Cloud Spanner

Cloud Spanner is a managed, globally distributed relational database from Google Cloud. It offers SQL and PostgreSQL interfaces and is delivered only as a proprietary managed service, so there is no downloadable software and no version number to track. Its recent release notes mention graph support, vector indexes, a columnar engine and a Cassandra interface. The most recent release note is dated 18 September 2026, and it records Queues becoming generally available on 17 September 2026. Buyers should take current prices from Google Cloud’s pricing page or calculator. Buyers should consult the Google Cloud pricing page directly and use its calculator for an estimate. Because Spanner runs only on Google Cloud, adopting it ties an application to that provider, which is a decision to weigh against the benefits of a managed distributed database. Teams should also review the release notes regularly, since features such as graph and vector support are being added over time and may change which workloads suit the service. There is no separate commercial edition to choose, because the service itself is the product that Google Cloud sells.
