CockroachDB is a distributed SQL database with a PostgreSQL-compatible interface, built to scale across nodes and regions. Cockroach Labs develops it. The software is released under the CockroachDB Software License, which is proprietary and source-available rather than open source. In late 2024 the company retired its Core offering and moved to a single Enterprise offering under that licence, which is available at no charge for individual users and small businesses. Production use needs a licence key, and telemetry is required unless the key permits otherwise. It can be run self-managed or as the managed CockroachDB Cloud service. The company releases a new major version each quarter. The latest release is v26.3, an Innovation release that became generally available on 19 August 2026. The most recent Regular release is v26.2, from 27 April 2026, and v25.4, from 3 November 2025, is the long-term support line. Version 26.4 is only in alpha and beta testing, with general availability expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Buyers should check the licence terms carefully, because organisations above the small business threshold need a paid Enterprise licence for production use.
