FreeOffice

FreeOffice is a free office suite published by SoftMaker Software GmbH of Nuremberg, Germany. It is the free edition of SoftMaker's own programs: TextMaker for word processing, PlanMaker for spreadsheets and Presentations for slide shows. SoftMaker says it may be used free of charge both at home and in a business.

What it does

FreeOffice is built to work with Microsoft Office files, with TextMaker, PlanMaker and Presentations as counterparts to Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The download files on the site, read on 27 October 2026, are for FreeOffice 2024. The free edition leaves out the writing, translation and image tools that SoftMaker adds in its paid SoftMaker Office subscription. SoftMaker also offers a separate free PDF editor for Windows, FreePDF.

Platforms

FreeOffice is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. On Android and iOS, SoftMaker publishes its mobile apps under the SoftMaker Office name, and TextMaker, PlanMaker and Presentations are free there as well, so a user can move between a desktop and a phone with the same three programs.

Who it is for

It suits home users, students, charities and small businesses that need to open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and cannot justify a subscription. Organisations that later need the paid features, volume licensing or the newer program versions can move to SoftMaker Office, which uses the same file handling and interface. The site does not name a software licence for FreeOffice; it is free to download and use but its source code is not published.
