When a file format moves faster than its standard
Microsoft has revised its notes on how Office extends ISO/IEC 29500 57 times since 2009; the core standard text dates from 2016. Why…
Free, open-source desktop office suite from Genspark with documents, spreadsheets, slides, PDF, Markdown and HTML editors and a built-in AI assistant.
GenOffice is a free, open-source office suite for desktop computers, published by Genspark. It has six editors, for documents, spreadsheets, slides, PDF, HTML and Markdown, and an AI assistant built into each one. Its code is on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 licence; the repository was created on 31 July 2026 and its newest release on 27 October 2026 was version 0.12.115, published on 26 October.
GenOffice opens and saves Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (.docx, .xlsx and .pptx) and, by its own account, rewrites only the parts of a file that are edited, leaving everything else unchanged. It can open OpenDocument files (.odt, .ods and .odp) but saves them as Office files, not back to OpenDocument. The PDF editor handles text, images, annotations and forms, and converts PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint on the computer. The assistant drafts and restyles text, builds spreadsheets with working formulas and generates slides, and its edits appear as tracked changes that can be rolled back. A home screen searches the full text of local files. A command-line tool and an MCP server let scripts and coding agents create and edit Office files.
Opening, editing, saving and converting files happen on the user's computer; only requests to the AI assistant leave it, and only when it is used. The apps are free to download with no adverts or watermarks. The AI features use Genspark credits or the user's own key for a choice of AI providers, whose charges may apply. Official builds send limited usage statistics by default, which can be turned off in the settings.
It runs on macOS 11 or later, Windows 10 or later and 64-bit Linux. It suits people who want a free desktop suite with AI help that works on local files, and teams that generate Office documents from scripts.
