Causa Prima raises $20m seed for agents that settle invoice disputes

13 October 2026: Causa Prima, a startup whose AI agents negotiate invoices, payment terms and disputes between companies, has raised $20 million. Base10 Partners led the seed round, which brings the company's total funding to $30 million.

Not yet independently verified. Causa Prima's site states only the amount, in a banner that links to Fortune. The investors, the seed label, the headcount and the offices come from Fortune and are not on the company's own pages. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.

The investors and the earlier round

Fortune reports that QED Investors and FJ Labs joined as new backers, alongside existing investors Creandum, Kfund and Borusan Ventures. The round closed in September and followed a $10 million pre-seed. Fortune says the valuation was not disclosed.

The company's own site carries only a banner reading "We raised $20 million funding", linked to the Fortune story. Rexhi Dollaku, general partner at Base10, said in a written statement: "Causa Prima is building for the handoff between companies."

How the agents work

Causa Prima calls itself an agent-to-agent platform for enterprise finance. A buyer's agent and a supplier's agent talk to each other to match invoices, clear disputes and handle approvals on both sides. Agents can also settle payment terms and capture early-payment discounts, and they can reach suppliers or customers not yet on the network by email.

The site lists four functions: automate, negotiate, forecast and steer. The forecasting tool gives a 30-day cash forecast from agent-confirmed data, and the steering tool lets a finance team set cash floors and decide when to take discounts. It claims more than 150 integrations, including SAP, NetSuite, Xero, QuickBooks and Stripe, and lists SAP Certified and GDPR compliance, with ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II shown as in progress.

Fortune says the company earns a cut when its agents successfully negotiate early payments between buyers and suppliers.

Claims on the site

The site says it is trusted by more than 3,000 accounts and quotes an unnamed head of shared services at a European steel producer. It cites results of 86% touchless processing, up from 34%, discounts of €1.6 million, and a cycle time down from 11 days to 2. None of these is attributed to a named customer, and Fortune names no customers.

The people and the plan

Maex Ament is a co-founder and chief executive. He founded Taulia, the supply-chain finance and e-invoicing company, in 2009, and Centrifuge, a decentralised finance project, in 2017. Co-founder Henrik Gebbing left McKinsey in 2018 and co-founded the fintech Finoa. Philip Stanislaus, another co-founder, is chief technology officer and previously led engineering under Ament at Centrifuge.

Fortune describes Causa Prima as Delaware-based, with offices in Madrid and Munich, 25 employees and plans for a New York office. The money goes to expanding the platform and entering the US market. Ament told Fortune: "What we need is a network of agents." He added that "the status quo today is that a lot of things are still somewhat manual."
