A mathematics teacher named Markus Mosele founded Löwenfels in 1986, in offices on Lake Lucerne, with one concrete aim: software written specially for the compensation funds that administer old-age insurance. The company still sits in Lucerne and says it now has about 100 staff, customers in 20 Swiss cantons and two ISO certifications, 9001 and 27001. Its motto is Swiss Software Built to Last.

Software for compensation funds since 2007

Löwenfels built an integrated social insurance application, first introduced in 2007, which it says most cantonal compensation funds use. It covers the calculation and collection of AHV and related contributions, family allowances, maternity and paternity benefits, care allowances and income compensation, and the legal rules are built into the business processes and updated as the law changes. The company says it could implement the federal emergency payments during the pandemic quickly, and gives 2022 figures of 6,336 users and about 1.34 million active members managed.

Checking hospital and care invoices for cantons

For health care payers, Löwenfels sells software that checks hospital invoices for cantons, running on premises, with DRG and TARPSY invoices covered and nine cantons named as users, among them Uri and Lucerne. A related product automates residual cost settlements under the nursing care financing rules, with a review matrix of more than 50 criteria and automatic booking to the finance system. The canton of Aargau is a named user.

Archive, consulting and the ELCA shareholding

It is also the exclusive Swiss distributor of EASY SOFTWARE's archive products, offered on premises, in the cloud or hybrid, with data stored in Switzerland, and offers consulting on digitalization and on using AI in authorities. On 4 November 2026 the company announced that its owner and CEO Oliver Meyer had settled his succession by choosing ELCA Group as a new Swiss shareholder. Löwenfels keeps its name, its Lucerne site, its strategy and its management team.
