TiDB is an open source, MySQL-compatible distributed SQL database from PingCAP that separates compute from storage for transactional and analytical workloads.
TiDB is a MySQL-compatible distributed SQL database that separates compute from storage and supports both transactional and analytical workloads. PingCAP develops it, and the company says it started in 2015. The database is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, so it is open source. It can be run self-managed, and PingCAP also sells TiDB Cloud on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, as well as a self-managed commercial option. The current stable line is v8.5, with v8.5.8 published on 27 August 2026. A maintenance release of the older line, v7.5.8, is newer by date, published on 17 September 2026. Published TiDB Cloud pricing includes a free monthly allowance on the Starter tier of 25 GiB of row storage, 25 GiB of column storage and 250 million request units. Essential starts at about 20 dollars per day, Premium from 1,800 dollars per month and Dedicated from 0.22 dollars per hour. Buyers should note that the two release lines are maintained in parallel, so the newest release number is not necessarily the one that suits a new deployment. Teams should confirm the intended line with PingCAP before choosing.
