Neo4j is a property-graph database that is queried with Cypher and is used for connected-data workloads. It also supports vector use. It is developed by Neo4j, Inc., and version 1.0 was released in 2010, after a first version was developed in 2002 and the company was formed in 2007.
The licensing is split by edition. Community Edition is under the GNU General Public License version 3, which is open source. Enterprise Edition is under the Neo4j Software Agreement, a commercial licence, so features reserved for Enterprise require a paid arrangement. The vendor publishes its licensing terms on a dedicated page that buyers should read before choosing an edition.
Neo4j can be run self-managed or as AuraDB, the vendor's managed cloud service. Pricing is not published, so costs for Enterprise Edition and AuraDB need to be confirmed with the vendor.
The latest release is 2026.09.0, dated 21 September 2026. Release notes mention that version 2026.08.0 had a critical query-failure issue which was fixed in 2026.08.1, so teams that installed the earlier build should confirm they are on the fixed version or later. Neo4j now uses calendar-based version numbers, which makes the age of an installation easy to judge at a glance.
