Redis is an in-memory data structure store used as a cache, a message broker and a primary store. It supports strings, hashes, streams and other data types, and Redis 8 bundles modules covering search, vector sets and time series. It is developed by Redis Ltd.
The licence changed, and buyers should check which terms apply to them. Redis 7.2 and earlier were released under the BSD-3-Clause licence. Redis 8 and later are offered under a choice of three licences: RSALv2, SSPLv1 or AGPLv3. Of these, RSALv2 and SSPLv1 are source-available rather than open source, while AGPLv3 is an open source licence with its own obligations for network use. The right choice depends on how the software will be used and distributed.
Redis can be run self-managed. Whether Redis Ltd. or others offer a managed cloud service was not confirmed, so that should be checked with the vendor. Pricing is not published.
The latest release is 8.10.2, dated 17 September 2026. It is a security-urgency release that adds a new cluster-bus-port-protected-mode option, so teams running Redis 8 clusters should review it promptly. Teams that need to stay on the BSD-licensed code base will need to remain on 7.2 or earlier, or consider a different engine.
