Infillion agrees to acquire location data firm Foursquare
22 September 2026 — Infillion, a New York advertising technology company, announced on 18 September 2026 that it is acquiring Foursquare, the location data and geospatial technology company. Infillion says the deal will combine Foursquare's store-visit data with purchase data from Catalina, which Infillion bought earlier this year, so advertisers can measure whether campaigns led to visits and purchases. Terms were not disclosed.
Not yet independently verified. Foursquare has issued no statement of its own beyond a home-page banner linking to Infillion's release, so the deal terms rest on Infillion's announcement and press reports (Axios, AdExchanger). Axios was read through its Yahoo Finance syndication because axios.com blocked access. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
What changes
Infillion says several Foursquare leaders will join its data business unit after the transaction closes, and that it will evaluate the future of Foursquare's consumer apps, Swarm and Superlocal, including open-source models and partnerships. Axios, which first reported the deal, says Foursquare will keep operating as an independent brand within Infillion and continue selling its data to customers, including those using rival ad platforms. Axios also reports that most of Foursquare's staff will join Infillion and that Foursquare's chief executive, Gary Little, will not; Infillion's release carries a supportive quote from him.
Foursquare has not published a press release of its own. Its home page carries a one-line banner saying it "has joined" Infillion, linking to Infillion's announcement. That wording sits awkwardly with Infillion's reference to what will happen after the deal closes, and neither company says whether it has closed.
What it means for developers
Infillion's release is written for advertisers. It does not mention Foursquare's Places API, its developer SDKs, pricing, service levels or data licensing for customers outside advertising. AdExchanger notes that when Infillion bought Catalina it gave a similar assurance about continued third-party data sales, but also told AdExchanger that Catalina data would eventually be available only through Infillion's own platform.
What to do
- Places API and SDK users: check your contract for change-of-control, termination and price-change terms, and ask your Foursquare account manager in writing whether API access, pricing and data licences will continue unchanged.
- Review data flows. If your app sends location data to Foursquare through an SDK, ask whether that data could be combined with Infillion's advertising or purchase data, and update your privacy notice if the answer changes what you tell users.
- Plan a fallback. For products that depend on Foursquare's places data, identify an alternative provider in case terms change.
- Advertisers using Foursquare measurement: ask whether it will stay available through other ad platforms or move only to Infillion's.
- Partners of Swarm or Superlocal: note that both apps are under review and ask for notice of any change.
What the announcement leaves out
Neither company gives a closing date, a price or a timetable for decisions on the consumer apps.
