5 October 2026: Collibra, the data governance company that now calls itself "the enterprise AI control plane", has acquired trail ML, a Munich startup founded in 2023 that automates compliance checks for AI systems. The release, datelined New York and Brussels on 5 October, gives no price, structure or closing date, and does not say what happens to trail ML's own product and customers.

What trail ML's software does

trail ML sells governance software for companies that build or buy AI systems. Its own site lists an AI registry, policy and literacy modules, curated frameworks, risk management, automated documentation, development tracking and audits, and says it holds ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 42001 certificates. It runs as software as a service in EU data centres, on premises, or in a customer's own cloud account, and it already listed Collibra among its integrations, next to OneTrust, ServiceNow, SAP LeanIX, Jira, GitHub, Databricks and MLflow.

The founders named in Collibra's release are Anna Spitznagel, trail ML's co-founder and chief executive, Nikolaus Pinger and Sven Hölzel. "We founded trail ML because we believe AI governance has to be automated and operational," Spitznagel says in the release.

How Collibra plans to use it

Collibra describes three things trail ML brings. Agents analyse the context of an AI system, work out which frameworks and controls apply, check whether those controls are in place and working, and flag gaps. Assessments re-run when the evidence behind them changes, so a compliance view is kept current rather than produced once a year. And runtime controls enforce Collibra policies where AI agents operate, blocking an action that breaks a policy before it happens.

The frameworks named are the EU AI Act, ISO 42001 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. "AI governance cannot become another manual process that slows organizations down as AI scales," says Felix Van de Maele, Collibra's co-founder and chief executive.

Questions for current customers

Collibra's boilerplate says it has more than 700 customers, including 78 of the Fortune 500, and governs more than 2 billion data assets. For them the release promises new capability without a date. For trail ML's customers, the open points are whether the stand-alone product continues, whether on-premises and own-cloud deployments survive inside Collibra, and whether the integrations with OneTrust and ServiceNow, both of which sell governance tools of their own, stay supported.

The deal also appeared in the weekly round-up of deutsche-startups.de on 10 October, which lists trail ML as a Munich GovTech company founded in 2023.
