Amazon Nova Canvas and Nova Reel reach end of life on 30 September

24 September 2026 — Amazon Web Services will stop serving two of its own generative models on Amazon Bedrock on 30 September 2026. Nova Canvas generates images and Nova Reel generates video. Both are listed as "Legacy" on AWS's model lifecycle page, with an end-of-life (EOL) date of 30 September 2026. After that date, AWS says requests to them will fail.

What changes

The AWS lifecycle table for models launched before 7 September 2026 covers three model IDs: amazon.nova-canvas-v1:0, amazon.nova-reel-v1:0 and amazon.nova-reel-v1:1. All three entered the Legacy state on 30 March 2026, and all three have an EOL date of 30 September 2026. The Nova Canvas model card shows the same date for each region where it runs: US East (N. Virginia), Europe (Ireland) and Asia Pacific (Tokyo).

AWS's rules for Legacy models already limit access. New customers cannot use them. Existing customers may lose access after 15 days without use, and no new Provisioned Throughput can be bought. Neither model has a "public extended access" period, so there is no paid grace period after the deadline.

After the EOL date, AWS says the model "is no longer available for use in all AWS Regions and requests made to this version will fail", unless a customer has a private arrangement with the provider. It also says migration "will not happen automatically". The lifecycle page and the model card do not name a replacement model.

Two other first-party Nova models have already gone. Nova Premier and the first version of Nova Sonic both reached EOL on 14 September 2026. The Decoder reported in July, citing Business Insider, that Amazon had moved Premier, Omni, Reel and Canvas into maintenance-only mode.

Who is affected

This affects any organisation that calls these model IDs directly through Bedrock, whether from application code, a workflow tool or an agent framework. UK teams most often use the Europe (Ireland) region, which is on the list. It also affects buyers of marketing, e-commerce or design software that generates images or video through Bedrock, because a supplier's feature may rely on these models without saying so.

What to do

• Search application code, infrastructure templates and configuration for nova-canvas and nova-reel. Include test and staging accounts, which break quietly.
• Pick a replacement and test it for output quality, content filtering, watermarking, cost and regional availability before 30 September. AWS has not named one, so compare what Bedrock currently lists as Active.
• If a supplier's product creates images or video for you, ask in writing which model it will use from 1 October, and whether outputs or prices will change.
• If you use a model within 15 days of the deadline only now and then, run it before then, or you may lose access early.
• Record the change in your AI inventory or risk register, especially if generated images are used in regulated advertising.

The deadline is days away. Anything still pointing at these model IDs on 1 October should be treated as broken.

Not yet independently verified. The end-of-life dates come from AWS’s own lifecycle table and model card, which carry no publication date. The only independent report found (July 2026) covers Amazon scaling back the Nova models, not these dates. No independent report of it was found, so it is only as reliable as that page. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
