About Sage Intacct
Sage Intacct is a cloud financial management system, and it is worth being precise about its scope: it is accounting-first rather than a full manufacturing ERP. There is no native production, bill-of-material or MRP capability of the kind found in Epicor Kinetic or SYSPRO. What it offers instead is unusual depth in the financial core, which is why it appears on shortlists alongside ERP suites for organisations whose complexity is financial rather than industrial.
Its central design decision is a dimensional general ledger. Instead of encoding meaning into a long segmented account code — the traditional approach, where the chart of accounts grows unmanageable as the business adds locations, departments and product lines — transactions are tagged with dimensions such as entity, location, department, project, customer, vendor, item or employee. The chart of accounts stays short, and reporting slices by any combination of dimensions after the fact rather than requiring the analysis to have been anticipated when the account structure was designed.
The second strength is multi-entity operation. Intacct handles many legal entities with their own currencies and books inside one system, with inter-entity transactions, automated eliminations and continuous consolidation, so a group close does not depend on assembling spreadsheets from subsidiary systems. Multi-currency handling and revenue recognition, including subscription and contract revenue schedules, are built in — capability that suits software and services businesses in particular.
Around that core sit accounts payable and receivable, cash management, order and purchasing entry, project accounting with time and expense, spend management, fixed assets, and reporting and dashboards. It is delivered exclusively as a multi-tenant cloud service with an open API, and integrates commonly with Salesforce and with payroll and HR systems rather than attempting to own those domains.
Sage Intacct has been endorsed by the AICPA as its preferred provider of financial applications. It sells through both a direct and an accounting-firm channel, and is most often evaluated by finance-led organisations in professional services, software and SaaS, healthcare and nonprofit sectors against NetSuite and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
