ERPNext

ERPNext is a general-purpose, open-source ERP developed by Frappe. Its entire source is published under the GNU General Public License v3, which means an organisation can read it, modify it, run it without licence fees and move hosting at will — the same freedom that defines the small group of credible open-source ERPs, and the reason it is the closest direct peer to Rutba ERP in the market.

It is built on the Frappe framework, a Python web framework created alongside the product, with MariaDB for storage. The framework is the interesting part architecturally: application objects are defined as metadata-driven "DocTypes" rather than hand-written models, and forms, list views, permissions, REST endpoints and reports are generated from those definitions. Building a new module is therefore closer to declaring a data structure than to writing an application, which is why the ecosystem of community-built Frappe apps is comparatively large for a project of this size.

Functionally it is broad. Accounting covers a general ledger, receivables and payables, multi-currency, cost centres and tax handling. Stock covers warehouses, serial and batch tracking, stock reconciliation and valuation. Manufacturing covers bills of material, work orders, material requests and production planning. Alongside those sit CRM and sales, purchasing and supplier management, project and task tracking with timesheets, human resources and payroll, asset management, quality, a website and e-commerce module, and a point-of-sale interface.

It can be self-hosted — installed from source, via a Docker deployment or through the project's bench tooling — or bought as a managed service from Frappe Cloud, which is the maintainer's commercial model alongside support and implementation. A partner network provides implementation services in many regions.

The trade-off relative to commercial suites is the usual one for open-source infrastructure software: no licence cost and complete control, in exchange for taking on hosting, upgrades and the implementation effort yourself, or paying someone to. Organisations comparing it against Odoo, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or Zoho typically weigh that control against the depth of local partner support and industry-specific functionality available for each.
