Supabase is acquiring Turso, the SQLite database company: both say nothing changes for existing users

2 October 2026 — Supabase, the open-source backend platform built on Postgres, announced on 2 October 2026 that it is acquiring Turso, the company behind libSQL and a hosted, distributed SQLite database. The announcement, by Supabase's chief executive Paul Copplestone, frames the deal around database infrastructure for AI agents, which create large numbers of small, short-lived databases.

Not yet independently verified. This rests on Supabase’s own announcement; Turso’s own statement and any independent report were not read. No price or closing date was stated, and the post does not say whether the deal has closed. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.

What the parties say

  • "For existing users, nothing changes." Supabase will continue building around Postgres, and Turso will continue its work on SQLite.
  • Turso keeps operating, "with a clear path into the broader Supabase ecosystem as workloads grow".
  • Turso's founders, Glauber Costa and Pekka Enberg, join Supabase, and Glauber Costa leads its work on infrastructure for agents.
  • Both companies stress a shared commitment to open source. The post does not say what happens to Turso's open-source projects.

What customers should check

Acquisitions of developer platforms often keep products running for a long time, but the terms customers rely on can change gradually. If you run production workloads on Turso:

  • Contract and pricing: confirm that your current plan, prices and service levels continue, and for how long, and who your contracting party is after the deal closes.
  • Open-source dependencies: if you build on libSQL or Turso's other open-source projects, watch their repositories for changes in governance or licence.
  • Data residency and processing: check whether the data-processing agreement and subprocessors change when Turso becomes part of Supabase.
  • Exit plan: SQLite's portability is an advantage; keep a tested export path.

Supabase customers are not affected by the announcement itself.
