BYD Seal 6 DM-i

The Seal 6 DM-i is a plug-in hybrid saloon for drivers who spend most days in town but want the freedom of a petrol engine for long runs. BYD quotes up to 140 km (about 87 miles) of pure-electric range in town and up to 1,505 km (about 935 miles) of combined range, with fuel consumption of 1.5 L/100 km. Zero to 100 km/h takes 8.5 seconds.

Hybrid performance

The car uses Super Hybrid with DM technology, a dual-mode plug-in hybrid system with an efficient petrol engine as the backup. Fast DC charging is mentioned alongside the built-in AC charger, which lets owners refill the battery at home. The fastback profile, active air intake grille, integrated door handles and streamlined roof bring a drag coefficient of 0.248, which BYD links to lower fuel use.

Design and cabin

The styling is ocean-inspired: a wave-shaped grille, crystal-style headlights with a Double-L signature, layered LED-matrix tail-lights and dual waistlines. The car rides on 18 inch alloy wheels. A 15.6 inch floating touchscreen dominates the dashboard, and a compact electronic gear selector keeps the centre console clean. Seats have one-piece headrests and, in BYD's description, power adjustment, memory, ventilation and heating. Heated steering is offered on higher trims. The rear cabin is described as spacious, and a panoramic sunroof is included.

Boot and safety

The boot holds 491 litres and the rear seats fold down for larger loads such as luggage, gear or oversized items. The driving-assistance suite lists parking sensors, parking cameras, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assistance, driver fatigue management and front and rear cross traffic alert. A safety rating is not yet recorded for the car.
