Trae cuts usage allowances for existing Pro+ and Ultra subscribers at unchanged prices
22 September 2026 — Trae, the AI coding editor from ByteDance, has published billing rules that move existing Pro+ and Ultra subscribers on to its new plans with smaller monthly usage allowances, while keeping what they pay. The documentation page carries no date of its own. Its worked examples use a notice date of 17 September 2026 and show the change landing at renewals in October and November.
Not yet independently verified. Rests on a single undated Trae documentation page; the 17 September notice date and the allowance figures come from its worked examples. No dated notice from Trae or independent report was found to corroborate them. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
What changes
Trae charges by token use, which is deducted from a monthly allowance it calls Dollar Usage. When that runs out, customers can switch on On-Demand Usage, a pay-as-you-go option billed in $3 steps.
For existing monthly subscribers, the page's examples show:
- Pro+: the price stays at $30 a month; the allowance falls from $90 to $60.
- Ultra: the price stays at $100 a month; the allowance falls from $400 to $200.
In exchange, the new plans add access to more models, which the page lists.
A subscriber who does nothing is moved automatically on the first renewal date at least 30 days after the notice; Trae says this generally means 30 to 60 days. In its examples, a subscriber notified on 17 September who renews on the 15th keeps the old allowance at the 15 October renewal and moves on 15 November, while one who renews on the 20th moves on 20 October. Accepting the upgrade early unlocks the extra models straight away, with the lower allowance from the next renewal.
Annual Pro+ and Ultra subscribers keep their current allowance and models until the plan expires. Under a limited-time offer, they can buy a new annual plan at half the new annual price, either before or after expiry ($300 for Pro+ in Trae's example). Upgrading early is treated as a new purchase, with a refund of the old plan in proportion to its unused allowance.
For comparison, the same page lists the new plans for new customers at $60 a month for Pro+ with a $60 allowance, and $200 a month for Ultra with a $200 allowance. Existing subscribers keep their old price only while their monthly subscription runs without a break.
What to do
- Check each seat's renewal date and work out when the lower allowance takes effect; across a team this may be spread over several weeks.
- Compare recent Dollar Usage per seat with the new allowance. Anyone using more than $60 (Pro+) or $200 (Ultra) a month will hit the limit sooner or pay on demand.
- Decide whether to enable On-Demand Usage, and set an internal spending limit if you do.
- For annual plans, note the expiry date: the current allowance holds until then.
- Keep a copy of the notice email and of the page, because the page itself is undated.
- If the extra models are not needed, compare other coding tools before the change lands.
What the page leaves out
The page does not say whether subscribers who cancel because of the change can get a refund; its general policy allows refunds only within 24 hours of purchase and before any use. It does not set out the before-and-after allowances for existing Pro and Lite subscribers in the same detail.
