Anthropic cuts Claude prices 40% for US government buyers via GSA

27 October 2026: Anthropic has signed a new agreement with the US General Services Administration that gives government buyers 40% off Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API. The discount applies to purchases made directly from Anthropic now and, "in the coming months", to purchases through cloud providers. It also extends beyond federal agencies to state, local, tribal and territorial governments.

Not yet independently verified. The $1 billion saving and the usage figures are Anthropic's own estimates, and GSA's own announcement of the agreement was not found when we read Anthropic's post. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.

How agencies buy at the discount

Agencies can buy at the OneGov discount through GSA's Multiple Award Schedule today. There is no minimum spend commitment: agencies pay for the usage they consume. Anthropic estimates the discounts will save the government $1 billion, a figure it does not break down.

The company is also starting a programme to help agencies put Claude to work, modelled on what it offers private-sector customers, which it expects to bring to the public sector in the coming weeks.

Which products carry which authorisation

The authorisation status decides what data each route may handle, and it differs by product:

  • Claude for Government, generally available since 30 September, is authorised at FedRAMP High;
  • Claude through Amazon Bedrock is authorised at FedRAMP High, with selected models authorised for DoD IL4 and IL5 workloads in AWS GovCloud;
  • Claude through Google Cloud's Vertex AI is authorised at FedRAMP High;
  • Claude Enterprise is still in process for FedRAMP Moderate under the FedRAMP 20x programme.

Since the cloud-provider discount is still to come, an agency that buys through Bedrock or Vertex today for the higher authorisation does not yet get the 40%.

The usage Anthropic reports

Anthropic says about 500 US federal, state and local government organisations now use Claude, that weekly active users of Claude for Government are up about eightfold since February, and that usage across federal civilian agencies has grown about 20-fold in a year. Its examples include a Utah pilot in which 34 developers across 10 state agencies used Claude Code, with 71% reporting more than 20 hours saved by the end of four weeks.

What a state or local buyer should check

For state and local buyers the change is the bigger one, since OneGov terms have mostly been aimed at federal agencies. A state IT office that buys through its own contracts should check whether it can order from the GSA schedule under cooperative purchasing rules, and compare the discounted list price with any enterprise agreement it already holds. The post does not say whether existing contracts are repriced or only new orders.
