Hyundai commits USD 15.5 billion to India and opens its Pune plant
13 October 2026: Hyundai Motor Group will invest USD 15.5 billion in India over seven years, from 2026 to 2032, and the day after announcing it opened a new plant at Talegaon near Pune that starts at 170,000 vehicles a year. The group says the money covers factories, research, suppliers and new mobility businesses, with India serving as a base for exports to other markets.
Not yet independently verified. Every figure here comes from Hyundai's own two newsroom releases. The releases do not say how much of the USD 15.5 billion goes to electric or software-defined vehicles. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
Where the money goes
The commitment was announced in New Delhi after a meeting at the Prime Minister's Office. A dedicated investment entity in India will coordinate execution, look for local partners and support partnerships. Manufacturing capacity at Hyundai Motor India Ltd and Kia India is the first named area, followed by a research centre in India, for which about USD 700 million is planned, including a vehicle testing track.
The supply chain gets its own line: strategic investments in regional partners to deepen the share of parts made locally. Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung said, "India remains one of Hyundai Motor Group's most important and strategic markets globally."
Pune: 170,000 units now, 320,000 by 2030
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the Pune plant on 14 October 2026. Initial capacity is 170,000 units a year, planned to reach 320,000 by 2030, with an engine shop making 150,000 engines a year. The investment is INR 11,000 crore, spent in phases.
Hyundai says 55 supplier partners have invested nearly INR 4,600 crore in Maharashtra, and that the plant supports more than 18,000 job opportunities in the state, counting tier-II vendors. It will build the all-new Hyundai VENUE for global export, with more than 35 countries planned as markets. The factory uses Industry 4.0 methods, AI-driven analytics and the E-FOREST digital manufacturing platform, and its lines are designed to handle several models, including future combustion and hybrid cars.
What 1.4 million vehicles a year already looks like
India is already a large base for the group. Capacity stands at over 1.4 million vehicles a year: 824,000 at the Hyundai Motor India plant in Chennai, 170,000 at Pune, which will be scaled in phases, and 431,000 at the Kia plant in Anantapur. The two Indian companies employ over 24,000 people.
Hyundai entered the market in 1996 with the SANTRO and now counts nearly 10 million customers there. Exports since 1999 have reached 4 million passenger vehicles in total, which Hyundai says makes it the first carmaker in India to reach that figure.
Ventures beyond building cars
The investment plan goes past factories. The group says it will support startups and new mobility services in India, and is considering ventures in automotive financing, EV charging and end-of-life vehicle recycling.
Social programmes are part of the announcement as well. Hyundai points to its Samarth disability campaign and a planned Hyundai Academy for Technical Skills in Chennai, and says it has contributed about USD 110 million to social causes in India since 2016.
