Euro NCAP gives four new cars 4 or 5 stars, Cupra Raval needs its safety pack

2 September 2026: Euro NCAP's September round rated the AION UT, GEELY E2 and Leapmotor B05 at five stars and the CUPRA Raval at four stars as standard, rising to five when buyers add the Safety Pack. The four cars were assessed under the 2026 protocols.

Not yet independently verified. Euro NCAP is the only source used here, and the page does not give category percentages for the Kia K4. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.

Scores car by car

Euro NCAP reports four percentages: Safe Driving, Crash Avoidance, Crash Protection and Post-Crash.

  • AION UT, 5 stars: 66, 74, 91 and 88
  • CUPRA Raval standard, 4 stars: 58, 66, 91 and 95
  • CUPRA Raval with Safety Pack, 5 stars: 72, 77, 91 and 95
  • GEELY E2, 5 stars: 79, 72, 86 and 95
  • Leapmotor B05, 5 stars: 66, 77, 92 and 89

The pack is a compromise

Euro NCAP Programme Director Dr. Aled Williams said, "It would be preferable for European brand CUPRA to offer active technologies as standard, but a safety pack is a compromise." The Raval has no child presence detection. The pack lifts its Safe Driving score from 58 to 72 and its Crash Avoidance score from 66 to 77, while Crash Protection and Post-Crash stay at 91 and 95.

Faults that stars do not show

Across the four new cars the GEELY E2 has the highest Safe Driving score, 79, and the Leapmotor B05 the highest Crash Protection score, 92. The AION UT and the Leapmotor B05 share a Safe Driving score of 66.

Euro NCAP flagged problems on each of the other cars. The AION UT relies heavily on its centre screen for key driving controls, has no child presence detection and has weaker frontal monitoring for a car and a motorcyclist crossing a junction. Its road-based speed limit recognition was accurate 68% of the time.

The GEELY E2, sold as the EX2 in some markets, comes with direct child presence detection as standard. Its automatic emergency braking was inconsistent, driver leg protection was poor in the front offset test, and the seatbelt of the 10-year-old dummy partly slipped off the shoulder. The Leapmotor B05 detects children left in the car but has no adaptive restraint for occupant stature and does not detect an unsafe front passenger position. Its emergency braking was strong in high-speed and junction scenarios.

Two carry-over ratings

Euro NCAP also listed two earlier cars. The Kia K4 from 2025 earns four stars as standard and five with a Safety Pack; it was first tested by ANCAP, with extra testing in Europe. The Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabrio from 2025 holds five stars, its scores carried over from the coupe. Both were rated under the 2025 protocols.

Chinese brands in European showrooms

Euro NCAP says Chinese models made up 7% of new car sales in the EU and nearly 10% in the UK last year. The number of Chinese cars it has assessed has risen nearly tenfold since 2021, and the first Chinese-made car it tested dates from 2010. The GEELY E2 was China's best-selling car last year.
