grommunio GmbH

grommunio GmbH is a software company in Vienna, Austria. It makes grommunio, a groupware platform for email, calendars, contacts, tasks, chat, video meetings and files that organisations run on their own servers or with a hosting partner. The company says it was founded and is developed in Vienna, and that it is independently owned and operated. Its website gives its address in the DC Tower on Donau-City-Straße.

What it makes

grommunio is presented as a replacement for an on-premises Microsoft Exchange server. Its server speaks the protocols that Outlook and phones already use, MAPI over HTTP, Exchange Web Services and Exchange ActiveSync, as well as IMAP, POP3 and SMTP for other mail programs. It reads user accounts from LDAP or Active Directory. The core server, called gromox, and the web interface are published as open source on GitHub and Codeberg, where the company lists 38 public repositories.

Who it serves

The company names deployments from six users to more than 100,000. It sells through partners: its pricing page says licences are sold only by certified grommunio partners, who also give first and second level support, and its home page counts more than 200 partners worldwide. Its frequently asked questions say customer data stays wherever the organisation runs its own infrastructure, and that grommunio itself stores none of it.

The Community edition is free for up to five users, without manufacturer support. Paid plans carry the same software features and differ only in size and support.
