CATMA
A browser-based text annotation and analysis tool for humanities researchers working alone or in teams
About CATMA
CATMA, short for Computer Assisted Text Markup and Analysis, is a web tool for marking up and analysing texts. It is built for humanities research and runs in the browser, so no installation is needed. The project is based in Germany and serves both individual scholars and research teams.
What CATMA does
- Text annotation: users mark passages much as they would in a printed book, including overlapping and multiple readings of the same section.
- Custom tagsets: categories can follow a fixed taxonomy or be created on the fly during exploratory reading.
- Project workspaces: researchers upload their own corpus and run as many projects as needed, each with its own team.
- Collaborative work: team members annotate the same texts together.
- Visualisations: interactive views such as word clouds, distribution graphs and a Double Tree display.
Clients
CATMA serves researchers in digital humanities and literary studies, supporting both qualitative and quantitative approaches to a research question.
