WeRide starts a global insurance programme with Allianz and Ping An

27 October 2026: WeRide, the autonomous driving company listed in New York and Hong Kong, has launched a global insurance partnership programme with two founding insurers, Allianz Insurance Singapore and Ping An Property & Casualty Insurance Company of China. The release, datelined Guangzhou, says the aim is to support the responsible deployment of tens of thousands of WeRide autonomous vehicles worldwide.

Not yet independently verified. This rests on WeRide's own release; we have not seen statements from Allianz Singapore or Ping An, and no policy terms, limits or premiums are published. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.

What the cover will include

The insurers will co-develop cover for the full life of Level 4 operations, tailored to local requirements. The release lists motor liability, commercial general and product liability, and privacy and cybersecurity risks. WeRide expects long-term partnerships, centrally run insurance programmes and bigger fleets to improve insurance efficiency and unit economics. It says it will add markets and insurers, and explore insurance terms, pricing and coverage models designed for autonomous vehicles.

The programme covers existing deployments in China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and launches planned in broader Europe.

Why these two insurers

Allianz Insurance Singapore is the third-largest motor insurer in Singapore by gross written premiums as of the second quarter of 2026. WeRide says it was the first Singapore insurer to cover a fully driverless vehicle, through the Robobus service at Sentosa, and later extended cover to WeRide Robotaxis in the Ai.R autonomous shuttle service run with Grab in Punggol. As of October 2026, WeRide says Ai.R has carried more than 13,000 unique riders and logged over 135,000 km of autonomous mileage.

Ping An P&C, which WeRide calls the second-largest property and casualty insurer in China by gross written premiums, has developed locally compliant solutions for Robotaxi operations in China and the Middle East. These cover Beijing, Guangzhou, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and support service through WeRide Go and third-party platforms Uber and TXAI.

The scale WeRide states

WeRide says it operates about 3,600 autonomous vehicles worldwide, including more than 1,800 Robotaxis, in 13 countries and over 60 cities. It lists driving permits in nine markets: China, the UAE, Singapore, France, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Spain and the US.

Jennifer Li, WeRide's chief financial officer and head of international, calls insurance a necessary part of the infrastructure for bringing autonomous driving to scale globally. Ong Bi Ying, chief executive of Allianz Insurance Singapore, and Hequn Shi of Ping An P&C also give statements.

The release sets out intentions, not signed policies for any particular fleet, and carries WeRide's forward-looking statements notice. No premium, limit or start date is given. For cities licensing driverless services, the practical question is whether a standard insurance programme becomes a condition of a permit. Our autonomous vehicle operator category lists 15 companies.
