Joomla!

Joomla! is an open source content management system used to build websites and web applications. Its first version came out in 2005, and a volunteer community of developers still maintains it. The project publishes regular security and bugfix releases alongside beta versions of upcoming major releases.

What Joomla! offers

• Content management — create and organise pages, articles and site structure through a web interface.
• Extensions — thousands of add-ons cover extra features for a site.
• Templates — ready-made designs let owners change how a site looks.
• Self-hosting — the software can be downloaded and installed on a self-managed server or development environment.
• Hosted option — a hosted site route is offered from the project's website.

Who it works with

Both newcomers and expert developers, according to the project. It suits people building anything from a simple site to a larger web application.
