Allotrope also leads a key public-private collaboration initiative focused on the financial sector in Southeast Asia Greening the Banks aims to strengthen the capacity of Southeast Asian financial institutions to actively participate in green finance, with the ultimate goal of rapidly scaling renewable energy investments, while decreasing capital flows to fossil fuels Greening the Banks unlocks scaled green investments in the region by facilitating in-country dialogues among financial institutions, project developers, and regulators, while proactively collaborating with global, regional, and local initiatives GTB also provides targeted technical assistance and sustained engagement with banks and regulators to unlock transactions with project developers and rapidly scale the green project pipeline
LUPA is an emerging blended finance initiative seeking to support local utilities or “electric cooperatives (ECs)” in the Philippines to invest in, own, and benefit from renewable energy projects After successfully completing a feasibility study and design process in 2020-2021, LUPA is now entering its Proof of Concept phase, expanding engagement with ECs and development and financing partners, and moving toward the launch of a new local corporate entity, named Kapuluan Renewables, to advance initial EC renewable energy transactions
One of Allotrope’s key strategic investments is the Anderson Biomass Complex (ABC), an integrated biomass facility working to incentivize sustainable forest management in California ABC utilizes and creates demand for wood that would otherwise be treated as a waste product by turning small-diameter, non-merchantable timber and discarded tree tops into firewood as well as wood dowels, posts, and poles for agricultural and residential markets Preserving larger older trees that are important carbon dioxide sinks, while thinning smaller diameter trees, is a key element of good forest management as it improves water quality and quantity and reduces the risk of forest fires that produce black carbon and harmful emissions Through these efforts, ABC is building a replicable business model that will act as a long-term driver for improved forest management practices
