America's Seed Fund powered by NSF (NSF SBIR/STTR) is a US public funding programme run by the National Science Foundation. It provides early research and development funding to small businesses building deep technologies, and it takes no equity in the companies it funds.

  • Phase I proposals: research and development funding for projects lasting 6 to 18 months.
  • Phase II proposals: larger funding for projects that go further, submitted at a higher level.
  • Phase IIB supplements: supplement proposals open to active Phase II awardees.
  • Strategic Breakthrough: proposals for larger requested amounts, submitted via Research.gov.
  • Project Pitch: the first step for founders, after which only invited companies can send a full Phase I proposal under solicitation NSF 26-510.

Clients

US small businesses with fewer than 500 employees, at least half owned by US citizens or permanent residents, with the funded work carried out in the United States. The programme does not fund companies majority-owned by multiple venture capital, private equity or hedge fund firms.
