MassRobotics opens its healthcare robotics catalyst to cohort six
16 October 2026: MassRobotics, the Boston non-profit robotics hub, is taking applications for the sixth cohort of its Healthcare Robotics Startup Catalyst Program until 31 December 2026. The four-month programme takes no equity and helps robotics and automation teams work towards clinical readiness, technical validation and a route to market in healthcare and life sciences.
Not yet independently verified. The cohort six dates come from The Robot Report, which credits MassRobotics; the programme page on massrobotics.org still showed the previous cohort's application dates when we read it. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
Dates for applicants
Applications close on 31 December. MassRobotics will run evaluation and interviews from 1 to 20 January 2027 and announce the cohort on 29 January. The programme then runs from February to June 2027 in a mostly virtual format, so teams outside the US can take part, and ends with company showcases at the Robotics Summit & Expo in Boston on 2 and 3 June 2027, where attendance is mandatory. MassRobotics also encourages teams to attend Healthcare in Robotics Week in Boston in mid-March.
What a start-up gets
Selected companies are paired with senior mentors from MassRobotics' corporate partners, practising clinicians and medical organisations, and work towards milestones such as a proof-of-concept build, pilot design, regulatory planning or systems integration. Workshops are shaped around the cohort's needs, covering regulatory strategy, cybersecurity and software bills of materials, clinical workflow and pilot design.
The programme's scope is broad: surgical and interventional systems, lab and pharmaceutical automation, diagnostics and imaging workflows, hospital logistics, rehabilitation and assistive devices, and enabling technology such as sensing, precision motion and medical device cybersecurity. Start-ups from seed to Series C can apply, from anywhere in the world; past cohorts included teams from Spain, Australia, Greece, Korea, China, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and France.
Festo, Novanta, Mitsubishi Electric and now Intel
The founding partners are Festo, Novanta and Mitsubishi Electric US, and Intel has joined the steering committee this year, bringing its health and life sciences team's experience with edge AI and on-device computing for surgical robotics and operating-room automation. "What I love most is discovering the people behind the technology," said Johannes Linzbach, head of Festo's Research Hub Boston.
Since 2021 the programme has mentored 35 start-ups from pre-seed to Series A. MassRobotics says alumni have completed a public listing, advanced several proof-of-concept deployments and between them disclosed more than $180 million in funding. Bingda Li, chief executive of the cell-culture automation company Whelix, a former participant, said it offered "direct access to people who have experienced similar problems before".
Applicants are judged on technical maturity, clinical relevance, the feasibility of near-term milestones, programme fit and mentor alignment, and teams that can run a proof of concept within the four months are especially encouraged.
