China blocks SoftBank's purchase of ABB's robotics business there

ABB says it heard the ruling from SoftBank, which handles the approvals for the $5.375 billion sale. Neither the price nor the fate of the China unit is addressed.

China blocks SoftBank's purchase of ABB's robotics business there

5 November 2026: China's foreign investment security review office has prohibited SoftBank Group from acquiring the ABB Robotics business in China, ABB has confirmed. The ruling hits a $5.375 billion sale that was already signed, and ABB says only that talks continue.

Not yet independently verified. ABB's page shows no date, so we take 5 November from The Robot Report. The regulators' reasons, the unit's headcount and the installed base also come from that trade report, not from ABB or a Chinese government notice, and we have not read one. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.

What ABB has actually said

ABB's statement runs to a few sentences. It agreed in October 2025 to divest its Robotics division to SoftBank Group Corp. for an enterprise value of $5.375 billion, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. SoftBank manages the approvals process, and ABB says it "has been informed by SoftBank" of the ruling from the Office of the Working Mechanism for Foreign Investment Security Review.

The last line is that the two companies are "in close dialogue" and "working constructively on the transaction". The statement names no new price, no revised closing date and no plan for the China business, so none of those can be read into it yet. It covers China only and says nothing of approvals elsewhere.

Why regulators objected, according to the trade press

The Robot Report says regulators raised concern that data for training AI models could be transferred overseas. We have not seen that reasoning in a government notice, and ABB does not give it.

The same report describes a business with deep roots in the country. ABB Robotics is based in Zurich and is already a significant manufacturer in China. It has installed more than 500,000 robots and has about 7,000 employees, with its US headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Samantha Mou of Interact Analysis, quoted by the publication, said ABB was "quick in combining AI with its products" compared with the other Big 4 robot vendors.

What buyers of ABB robots should ask

For a factory running these arms, nothing in the statement changes a contract or a support line today. The questions are for the account manager: who would own and support an installed fleet in China if the sale goes ahead without that business, and where robot operating data sits under each outcome.

Our coverage of the FCC limits on foreign-made robots shows the same pressure from the US side, and our industrial robots listings cover other makers.

The Robot Report also says the US Department of Commerce determined last week that imports of robotics and industrial machinery pose a threat, a finding that could lead to tariffs. We have not read that determination.
