Spain: Red.es opens a 40 million euro call for AI use cases aimed at SMEs and startups, open until about 10 November 2026
9 September 2026 — Red.es, the Spanish public body for digital development, published a general invitation on 9 September 2026 to develop artificial intelligence use cases for small businesses and startups. The budget is EUR 40 million. It is a call for intermediaries, not a grant that an SME claims directly, and that distinction matters for how a software company should read it.
Not yet independently verified. The 10 November 2026 (23:59) closing time comes from secondary coverage; the Red.es press release states only 'two months from the day after publication in the electronic headquarters'. The procedure page itself was not opened (link taken from the press release), so confirm the exact deadline there. Funding is not a direct SME grant: applicants are associations and technology centres. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
What changed
Red.es opened an invitation for entities to take part in building ecosystems of applied AI. Each agreement can receive up to EUR 12 million, with Red.es covering up to 80 per cent. The collaborating entity must put in at least 20 per cent. Agreements run for two years.
Each selected agreement has to deliver at least 30 AI use cases that address real business needs across sectors. At least 15 of those must be generalised so that other startups and SMEs can reuse them. The press release gives the deadline as two months from the day after publication in the Red.es electronic headquarters; secondary coverage puts the closing time at 23:59 on 10 November 2026.
Who is affected
Eligible applicants are business associations, professional organisations, technology centres and innovation support entities working on AI and SME competitiveness. An entity can apply alone or in a group of up to five members.
SMEs and startups are the end beneficiaries. They are expected to take part through the selected entities, for example as pilot users or as suppliers of the AI solutions behind a use case. Software and AI vendors in Spain can therefore be affected as partners of an applicant, or as the source of reusable use cases, rather than as applicants themselves.
What to do
- Software and AI companies in Spain that want to supply use cases should approach the associations and technology centres in their sector now, because consortia need to be formed before the deadline.
- Associations and technology centres should read the procedure page in the Red.es electronic headquarters, confirm the exact closing time and check the co-financing and consortium rules before committing partners.
- SMEs that want to use the results should watch for the entities selected, since access is likely to be arranged through them, not through Red.es.
- Confirm the deadline on the official procedure page. Two sources describe it differently: one as two months from publication, the other as 10 November at 23:59.
Why it matters
The call funds reusable AI use cases for small firms rather than individual company grants, which changes who sees the money and who writes the code. A vendor whose product is chosen as the basis of a use case may reach many small buyers through one agreement. A vendor that is not close to an applicant has little route in once the consortia are fixed.
For buyers, the requirement that half of the use cases be reusable suggests the output should be available to firms beyond the original participants. How that access works, including cost and licensing, is not set out in the press release and should be checked with the selected entities once they are named.
What is not yet known
The press release does not say how many agreements Red.es expects to fund within the EUR 40 million, nor the selection criteria beyond the stated requirements. The final list of selected entities will come after the deadline.
