An open-weights release with a date, a name and an empty repository

20 September 2026: A flagship model announced today - 600 billion parameters in total with 27 billion active per token, a million-token context window, and image and video input - opened its API the same day. Its announcement also carries something less common than a release: a dated commitment to publish the weights, in a named format, on 15 October.

Why the date is worth recording

Most "open" announcements in this field are adjectives. This one is a date, a format and a repository name, which means it can be checked on 15 October by anyone who bothers to write it down. That is a better disclosure than the industry norm, and it should be treated as such.

It is also, today, a plan rather than a fact. The repository named for the weights currently contains a single configuration file: no weights, no licence, no model card. There is nothing improper about a placeholder three weeks ahead of a release. There is something wrong with reading it as evidence that the weights exist, or with architecting on the assumption that the licence will permit what you need - because no licence has been published at all, and "open weights" covers everything from a permissive licence to a non-commercial one that forbids the use you had in mind.

On capability there is an unusually good signal: an independent evaluator scores the model 44 on its intelligence index, ranking it 24th of the 200 models it tracks, and publishes the output speed and the time to first token alongside it. That is a third-party measurement rather than a vendor claim, which is rarer on this board than it should be.

What it means for a buyer

If the open-weights release is the reason you are interested, calendar 15 October and check three things in this order: whether the weights are actually there, which licence is attached, and whether that licence permits commercial use in your setting. The third question has ended more evaluations than the first two combined.

Until then, price the hosted API as what you are buying, because it is. And if a supplier or a consultant builds you a plan that depends on those weights, ask them what the plan is if the date moves - which it may, without anyone being dishonest, because dates in this industry move.
