Nigeria: NITDA National AI Innovation Challenge for N-ATLAS builders closes applications on 12 October 2026
22 September 2026 — Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy is running the National AI Innovation Challenge 2026. It is implemented by ONDI and the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), part of NITDA. Applications opened on 22 September 2026 and close at 11:59 pm West Africa Time on 12 October 2026, with no late submissions.
Not yet independently verified. Single source, the challenge page itself, which lists dates and tracks but states no cash prize or grant amount; do not describe it as a funded grant. The 22 September 2026 date is the page's stated opening date. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
What changed
The challenge is build-only. Applicants must submit a working solution integrated with N-ATLAS, which the organisers describe as Nigeria's first open-source multilingual large language model. Teams choose one of three problem statements: developer infrastructure such as tools and SDKs, voice-first access in Nigerian languages, or sectoral fine-tuning for education, healthcare, agriculture, legal or financial uses.
Each submission needs seven items, including the working artefact, documentation of the N-ATLAS integration, evidence of real-world validation, technical documentation, a demonstration video of three to five minutes, team profiles and registration or institutional documents. Validation thresholds differ by problem: at least two external beta testers for developer tools, at least 50 documented real user interactions for voice applications, and a benchmark of at least 500 examples against the base model for fine-tunes.
Who is affected
There are two tracks, for teams of two to five people. The Academia and Research track is for university-enrolled students and researchers with a faculty supervisor and institutional endorsement. The Innovation and Enterprise track is for registered startups, companies, independent developers and innovation hubs, where at least half the team must be based in Nigeria. All members must be Nigerian citizens or registered Nigerian entities, and the work must be original and not previously awarded elsewhere.
Timeline
- 12 October 2026: applications close.
- 15 to 17 October: N-ATLAS integration check.
- 16 to 20 October: shortlist notifications.
- 25 October to 4 November: acceleration phase.
- 8 to 10 November: finals at the Digital Nigeria showcase.
What to do
Eligible Nigerian software teams should confirm their problem statement and gather the validation evidence first, because that is the slowest part to produce before 12 October. Teams outside Nigeria are not eligible under the stated rules. Questions go to the organisers at naic@nitda.gov.ng.
Why it matters
The challenge page lists the recognition for winners as research partnerships for the academic track, a government procurement pathway review for the enterprise track, investor introductions, inclusion in the NITDA AI talent registry and incubation support from ONDI. It does not state a cash prize or grant amount, so it should not be treated as direct funding.
For software vendors, the procurement pathway review is the notable element: it signals that the government wants local products built on its own model. Buyers in Nigerian public bodies and regulated sectors may see N-ATLAS-based tools appear over the coming months. How a pathway review translates into actual contracts is not described on the page.
What is not stated
The page does not give the number of winners, the size of any support package or the criteria weighting. Those details should be requested from the organisers before planning around them.
