Innovate UK sets October openings for two AI grant competitions for SMEs

28 September 2026 — Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), has published briefs for two grant competitions aimed at UK-registered small and medium-sized enterprises building new AI technology. Both open in October and both close in November. Both are for original AI and machine learning research. Projects that integrate, orchestrate or package existing models are excluded.

Frontier AI: SME Champions, Phase 1

• Opens: Thursday 1 October 2026. Closes: Wednesday 11 November 2026, 11am UK time. Online briefing on 7 October; applicants notified 26 January 2027.
• Funding: up to £3.1 million in total, as a grant. Each project's total eligible costs must be between £150,000 and £250,000. Grant rates for feasibility studies and industrial research are up to 70% of costs for micro and small firms and up to 60% for medium-sized firms.
• Project: one to three months, starting by 1 April 2027 and ending by 30 June 2027. Single SME applicants only, no subcontractors, one application per SME. Work must start at technology readiness level 1 to 3.
• Themes: AI-enabled health and life sciences; advanced materials with AI; secure AI for national security and defence; AI safety and assurance technologies. The last one covers agentic runtime control, dynamic evaluation environments, formal and runtime verification, and automated adversarial safety testing.

This is phase 1 of a three-phase pipeline. Only phase 1 winners can apply to phase 2. The brief describes phase 2 as projects of up to 12 months with costs of up to £1 million, subject to UKRI business case approval. Innovate UK states that similar competitions have had about a 2% success rate.

Efficient, Structured and Controllable AI Systems

• Opens: Monday 12 October 2026. Closes: Wednesday 18 November 2026, 11am UK time. Online briefing on 16 October at 11am; applicants notified 20 January 2027.
• Funding: up to £1.66 million in total. Each project's total costs must be between £50,000 and £150,000.
• Project: one to three months, starting by 1 April 2027 and ending by 30 June 2027. An eligible organisation can lead only one application. Subcontractors are not allowed.
• Themes: resource and data adaptive learning; causal and intervention-grounded models; learned modular computation and routing; geometric, equivariant and physics-structured learning. The brief names research-intensive AI startups, deep tech SMEs, university spinouts and pre-commercial companies developing their own AI technology. If a project builds on an existing frontier model, it must show an advance that is technically material above that base model. Innovate UK states a 4% success rate for similar competitions.

What both competitions will not fund

Both briefs exclude routine integration, deployment or productisation of existing AI tools and third-party models. The second brief also names prompt engineering and generic agent orchestration. Applicants must show clear ownership of background IP, a way to defend the result, named baselines with numeric targets and, for the Frontier AI competition, a quantified serviceable market.

Who is affected

UK SMEs doing new AI or machine learning research. A company that wraps existing models in a product is outside scope.

What to do

• Read both briefs now; each window is about six weeks.
• Decide which one fits. Your company can apply to Frontier AI only once, and each competition has its own theme list.
• Register for the briefings (7 and 16 October).
• Prepare the baseline metrics, IP position and market figures the briefs ask for before the competitions open.
• Plan your match funding: the grant covers at most 70% of eligible costs.
