2 October 2026 — SPRIND, the German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation, runs competitive "challenges" that fund teams through staged contracts rather than grants. Two are open now, and both accept teams from across Europe with international partners.
Not yet independently verified. This rests on SPRIND’s own challenge pages, read on 2 October 2026; the full eligibility terms are in each challenge’s participation documents, which we did not read. No independent report was checked. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
Recoding Medicine: health data for AI, closes 16 October
Funded by the Federal Ministry of Health, this challenge asks teams to "curate at least one unique health dataset of high clinical or societal relevance" from Europe's fragmented health data and show its value "through at least one concrete AI application", such as biomarkers, diagnostics or drug repurposing. Teams must show demonstrable access to at least one suitable dataset.
- Deadline: 16 October 2026, 18:00 CET.
- Funding: stage 1 up to €480,000 per team (12 months), stage 2 up to €455,000 (6 months), stage 3 up to €550,000 (6 months).
- Teams: up to 13 in stage 1, up to 7 in stage 2 and up to 4 in stage 3. Pitches are expected in early November.
This suits health-data platforms, hospital IT and clinical AI companies that already have data partnerships, since access to data is the entry ticket.
Next Frontier Robotics: multi-purpose robots made in Europe, closes 22 October
A 36-month, four-stage challenge for breakthroughs in multi-purpose robotics. Each team is financed through an individual fixed-price contract based on its own cost estimate, up to €7.2 million per team. Teams are expected to incorporate a company, ideally before the challenge starts, and SPRIND's FAQ says teams focused purely on AI or software for robots may apply.
- Deadline: 22 October 2026, 18:00 CEST.
What to do
- Read the participation agreement before applying: SPRIND's challenges come with conditions on intellectual property and company formation that differ from ordinary grants.
- Health-data teams: secure written confirmation of your data access before 16 October.
- Robotics software teams: decide whether to apply alone or with a hardware partner; the scale of funding assumes a full system.
