ChatGPT Pro 200 allowance is halved from 30 October 2026 and a new $500 Pro plan arrives: check Codex and agent budgets

2 October 2026 — OpenAI changed its top ChatGPT subscriptions at its developer conference on 29 September 2026. The existing $200-a-month Pro plan, now called Pro 200, keeps its price but loses half its included usage from 30 October 2026, and a new Pro 500 plan costs $500 a month. The Next Web reported the change the same day.

Not yet independently verified. OpenAI’s own help page refused our reader and was seen only as a search excerpt; the one-time credit and its expiry rest on The Next Web’s report. We will update this when OpenAI’s page can be read in full. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.

What changes

According to The Next Web, and consistent with the excerpt of OpenAI's help page:

  • Pro 200, from 30 October 2026: included usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex falls from 20 times to 10 times the Plus allowance, and GPT-6 Pro messages in chat fall from 200 to 100 a week. The price stays at $200 a month.
  • Existing subscribers keep their current limits until 29 October. OpenAI's help page excerpt says the earlier allowance applies to anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription between 22 September 2026 and 10 a.m. Pacific time on 29 September 2026. The Next Web adds a one-time grant of usage credits worth $2,500 for existing subscribers, expiring at the end of 2026.
  • Pro 500, at $500 a month, "is the only Pro plan with Ultrafast", OpenAI's fastest speed tier.
  • OpenAI said it will not bring back Pro 200's five-hour limit.

Who should act

Engineering teams that buy Pro seats for developers using Codex or agentic coding, and analysts who rely on GPT-6 Pro for long reasoning tasks, are the ones who will notice. A developer who used most of a Pro 200 allowance in October has half as much in November at the same price, or double the price for the larger plan.

What to do

  • Measure October usage per seat while the old limits still apply, so you know who would hit the new ceiling.
  • Spend the one-time credits deliberately before they expire at year end.
  • Compare three routes for heavy users: Pro 500 seats, API access billed by use, or a mix with another provider.
  • Check business and enterprise contracts separately: this change concerns the individual Pro plans.
  • Budget for the next change: two allowance cuts in a year across the industry are a reason to keep coding workflows portable between models.
