Plane Agents

Plane now lets an AI agent be an assignee on a work item like any other teammate, picking up triage, ownership, blocker-tracking and status updates inside the project rather than beside it.

About this launch

Plane Agents was announced on Plane’s own blog on 18 September 2026, four days before the product reached a wider audience through a launch leaderboard; the earlier date is the one recorded here. Plane is an open-source project-management tool that positions itself against the established trackers, and this release makes an agent a first-class assignee: you add it to a work item as you would a person, or tag it in a comment, and it reads the item, picks up the surrounding context and does the work. The built-in agents are aimed at the repetitive end — triaging incoming requests, assigning owners, tracking blockers and posting status updates — and the company describes them as operating within limits you define. Plane also publishes guidance on running agents in self-hosted deployments, which matters for a team whose reason for choosing Plane in the first place was keeping the work graph on its own infrastructure. The governance question is the one to settle before switching them on: an agent that can assign owners and close items is changing the record that everyone else plans against, and an audit trail that says which of those changes were made by a model is worth having on day one rather than after the first disputed sprint.
