Carbonite backs up files from personal and business computers to the cloud without the user having to remember to do it. The brand now sits within OpenText. It covers households with one computer through to small firms that need server backup and help with compliance.

What Carbonite offers

• Automatic cloud backup — documents, photos, music and, on some plans, videos copy to online storage without limits on space.
• File recovery — files can be restored after accidental deletion, hardware failure or a virus or malware attack, through a web browser or apps for Android and iOS.
• Encryption — data is protected with 256-bit encryption both in storage and while moving.
• Antivirus add-on — some plans bundle Webroot antivirus software.
• Business backup — server backup, managed backup policies and support for rules such as HIPAA, FERPA and GLBA.
