Rubrol

Rubrol is a document compilation engine written in Rust, built as a replacement for the usual approach of rendering PDFs by driving a headless Chrome instance. It compiles structured documents through Typst rather than a browser engine, and the case it makes is about cost and reliability at volume: the project reports a mean compilation of 5.8 milliseconds and under 28 MB of resident memory per container on a single core, and claims throughput of 10,000 documents a minute, and 318 times faster with 57 times less memory than headless Chrome. Every one of those figures is the project's own, measured by the project; no independent measurement is published, and the comparison is against a tool that was never designed for this job. The more durable reason to look at it is the second half of the product: it targets European electronic-invoicing compliance — EN 16931 and the Factur-X and ZUGFeRD hybrid invoice formats — which is a standards problem rather than a rendering problem, and something a browser-based pipeline cannot address at all. The core is open source under the LGPLv3 with a free Community tier limited to 100 documents a month for evaluation. Commercial use is licensed: Pro at $1,800 a year covers unlimited local execution, a commercial production licence and PDF/A-2b, and Enterprise at $4,800 a year adds certified ISO 19005-3 conformance, Schematron validation and European regulatory templates. It is published by an individual developer and the engine is at version 1.0. It was announced on Hacker News late on 19 September 2026.
