What to check before you hire a staff augmentation firm in China

• Working hours. China Standard Time is UTC+8 with no daylight saving: 8 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 7 in summer, and 12–13 hours ahead of the US East Coast. Agree the overlap you need before you sign.
• The people, not the pitch. Ask for the CVs of the actual people you will get, and interview them yourself. Ask what happens if one leaves: how fast they are replaced, and who pays for the handover.
• The company. Check the firm's business licence and its unified social credit code on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System.
• The contract. Who employs the people, the notice period, the rate for each role, and what happens to rates after the first year.
• Code and data. Make sure the contract gives you the intellectual property, and ask how the firm protects your code and data: access controls, device security, and ISO 27001 if the firm says it holds it.
• Continuity. Confirm how code, data and communication tools will work across the firewall, and whether any of the work is subject to export controls.
• References. Speak to two clients who have used the firm for staff augmentation, not only for projects.
