Mobileye plans its own robotaxi service starting in 2027

16 June 2026: Mobileye, the maker of driver-assistance and self-driving systems, says in an announcement from Jerusalem that it will own and operate a robotaxi business as well as supply the technology. The first service is set to launch in a US city in 2027, using an initial fleet of about 100 vehicles.

Not yet independently verified. Mobileye alone published the plan; the city, vehicle platform, partners and financial details are not yet disclosed. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.

From supplier to operator

Until now Mobileye Drive has been a standalone self-driving system built into partner programmes run by automakers and mobility providers. The new plan extends the company across the whole ride-hailing chain by pairing Mobileye Drive with the Mobility Platform and consumer apps of its Moovit subsidiary, multimodal trip planning, mission control for autonomous vehicles, fleet management and links to teleoperation infrastructure.

Mobileye frames this as an addition, not a switch. The company says it remains committed to supplying Mobileye Drive to automakers and mobility operators, and expects its own and its customers' robotaxi programmes to advance in parallel. To assemble the service it will work with makers of vehicles ready for autonomy, fleet operators, vehicle integration partners and technology suppliers.

The numbers it gives

The initial fleet of about 100 vehicles is targeted for a major metropolitan area in the United States from 2027, deployed in phases through the year to test the operating model under fully driverless conditions. If that works, Mobileye plans to scale substantially, targeting about 17,000 vehicles over the following five years.

Moovit is offered as the demand side. Mobileye says its platform serves more than 1.7 billion users in over 3,500 cities across 112 countries and 45 languages. The company also points to more than 230 million vehicles built with its technology inside, a measure of its assistance systems rather than of driverless operation.

Why Amnon Shashua says now

Prof. Amnon Shashua, Mobileye's founder and chief executive, argues that the industry depends on a small number of technology providers and business models. "We believe there is an opportunity for a new approach," he said, built on autonomous driving expertise, industry partnerships and proven capabilities across the mobility ecosystem.

He was explicit about existing customers: "This initiative is not a replacement for our existing partnerships; it is an extension of them."

What is still unspecified

The release does not name the city, the vehicle platform, the fleet operators or the partners who will supply cars. It gives no cost, funding or revenue figures for the new business. Those are promised for a Capital Markets Day planned in the United States before the end of 2026.

The plan is a statement of intent: the fleet counts are targets, the 2027 launch is a plan, and the partners are not yet named. Until now Mobileye has supplied technology to others, so running a service of its own is a new business for the company.
